Advert Of The Week – Marbles

29 06 2008

Advert Of The Week

Welcome to my first ‘Ad Of The Week’, every weekend(ish) i’ll be showcasing a classic/well made/stange/wtf Nintendo advert from the archives for your entertainment.

This week i’ve chosen a very stylish DS advert. It’s one of those adverts where they manage to get the product across as well as it’s purpose without going into mass details about it. the marbes are used well, keeping focus on the message throughout the advert while looking rather spiffy. Theres one particular scene towards the end where it’s on a road where the lighting and reflection is spot on. They also never look too out of place, which gives the advert a nice natural feel to it.

Anyway, thats enough ramble, here is the first ‘Advert Of The Week’

The Best Games You Never Played – Pac-Man Vs

27 06 2008

The Best Games you Never Played

Anyone who knows me knows i’m a big Pac-Man fan and out of all the Pac-Man remakes and spin offs, there’s only one that holds up with the original. That game is a small title for Gamecube and DS called Pac-Man Vs.

Originally developed by Miyamoto through the Triforce Project, Pac-Man Vs. was created to show off the Gamecube’s connectivity with the Gameboy Advance. It did this by taking the Pac-Man we know and love and putting your best mates in control of the ghosts. With a limited view the ghost players had to hunt down Pac -Man and avoid his power pellet death sprees. Meanwhile, one player would be holding the trusty GBA and controlling Pac-Man, doging his friends and chomping pellets. The player conrolling Pac-Man would gain points for every pellet eaten and if he was caught, the successful ghost would take their place as Pac-Man in a new round. It was a mad dash to 5000 for the title of Pac-Champ. It was such a simple idea but one that worked so damn well…

While it was brilliant fun, it wasn’t exactly the easiest fun to be had. Firstly you had to actually find a copy of the game (which was no easy feat) then grab four mates around your Gamecube and a Gameboy Advance (with the necessary cables). all these factors meant that very few people were able to enjoy it’s brilliance. Luckily, the game saw another day of light in Namco Museum for Nintendo DS, where it was added as an extra. This mode saw wireless connectivity as well as more stages to enjoy, and was the version which I instantly fell in love with. Many an hour was lost during my free periods at college as I wiped the floor with my Pac-Munching skills, clearing the round in a flawless victory and I had equally as much fun trapping my friends in a corner as a ghost, only to have someone else steal my kill from before me. It’s one of those games that never really gets boring and screams for one more go.

If you see a copy of Namco Museum I highly recommend you pick it up. As well as this brilliant lost gem you also get seven classics, such as Pac-man, Mappy, Galaga and Dig-Dig 2. Until then I leave you with the brilliant Pac-Man Fever.

This Way I Have No Choice

26 06 2008

Update

Ahoy there readers!

Firstly I just wanted to apologise for the lack of content these past few weeks. I’ve been very ill and haven’t been able to post. That said, i’ve got several ideas for posts brewing and by posting them here I have an obligation to actually write them. So expect to see these over the next few weeks:

  • Has NOE Killed WiiWare? (
  • The Evolution Of Rhythm Games (Working on this one. I’ve got alot to say but need to organise my thoughts)
  • Review: Toki Tori (Holding this off until I complete it)
  • Review: Space Invaders Extreme
  • Retrospective: Final Fantasy Tactics A2
  • The Best Games You’ve Never Played: PacMan Vs
  • Ad Of The Week: Marbles

I might also add Smash Stages once I get back into the game, or at least post up some of my best ones i’ve already made :)

The Best Games You Never Played is going to be a semi-regular new article about some of those rare gems that are so damn fun, while Ad of the week should hopefully be up (You Guessed It!) every week and is part of my Advert Database project i’m working on for WiiDs. In this section I will be showcasing some of Nintendos better, stranger and funnier ads from over the years. Smash Stages will likely be large blocks as once i’m playing I get creative but once it’s on the shelf i’m no fussed.

Hopefully will get these up soon for you all!

If you have anything you want me to write about, random questions for me to answer, or just want to say hi, email me here. Please do as I love getting your mail and will replay asap :)

All The Best!

WiiDs

This weeks podcast was a bit different since we didn’t have any notes or structure until 5 minutes before we started recording (and after that it was still 12 words rather than two pages), James and Mani were unavailable, Tom had to leave after 20 minutes, Jason said he had to leave after 40 minutes and I had to constantly leave to take phone calls from relatives.

Basically, rather than being 85% Ad Lib, it’s 100%. Still, be got through it all and brought up some good discussion :)

Retrospective – Alex Kidd In Miracle World

14 06 2008

Retrospective

Title Screen

Alex Kidd In Miracle World holds a place close to my heart as one of the first games I played. It was built into my brothers Master system II and we would all spend many an hour trying to get to the next level, only to have our last life cruely snatched away at the last moment, making us start again. I remember one time when we got further than we ever had before, but unfortunately as the night drew near we ended up keeping in on pause till the next day so we could carry on Alex’s quest t save the land from Evil King Janken.

Now, fifteen years later I’ve been given the chance to delve into the world of Alex Kidd once again thanks to the Wii’s virtual console feature, but how does it stand up to my fond childhood memories?

GameplayAfter a few minutes of watching Mario run around in circles collecting coins my game was finally downloaded and so it came time to play. Upon hitting the start button I was presented with the garishly yellow title screen and jaunty tune I had grown to love. Then it was onto the first level I have played so many times as I jump down the cliffs punching pterodactyl type things and collecting money bags. One thing I noticed though was the controls seemed alot more sensitive and slidey than i remembered. erhaps this was due to games getting the control schemes better due the the years, or the fact that the Master Systems control pad was so sticky that slidy controls were needed to make the game playable, but after a few minutes I found myself getting used to the controls. After that I felt at home jumping around puching blocks, thinking normal places looked odd and then remembering the secret/impending doom hidden inside of them. The smiles kept on coming as I fell into the ocean and the music changed to another of its limited sound set, which brings me to another gripe. I can’t remember underwater sections being this dodgy to control either, as you need to hold down to move down or you float back to the top. Anyway, it didn’t take me long to get the hang of things and soon I came across my first boss.

Alex Kidd broke away from the tradition of game bosses. Theres no punching, no jumping on heads, no hitting an axe the the end of a bridge. Instead you have to play the old classic of Janken (Rock, Paper, Scissors). It’s a game to the death with two out of three taking the crown. My mind started racing back trying to remember the tricks to working out what they were going to play and before soon “stone head” turned into a rice ball and I could pass.

I am thuroughly enjoying playing this classic once again and can’t wait to play some more. The only problem is that i’m stuck at the same place as I was all those years ago, but due to my greater gaming experience i’m sure I will eventually be able to conquer the game and claim my crown. I highly reccomend you pick this up and at 500 points its a steal.

Can I Play My Games In English Yet?

8 06 2008

Article

English Flag

Here in Europe it’s common to have to wait several months longer than Japan and the American Continents to recieve a game. This is usually due to translation, as the game is rescripted into French, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, Greek and many others. However, in 99.9% of all games that are released in Europe, developers forget one crucial language… English.

Some may argue that the games coming from America are already in English, but why should we have to put up with a bastardised version of our own language, filled with mispellings and words with different meanings. As far as i’m concerned, Americans do not speak English. Colour is spelt with a U, Grey has a E in, randomise has no Z’s in, Fries are chips and chips are crisps. Why should we have to put up with this shoddy excuse for the English language.

It can be argues that for small differences its not worth the effort, but if they are such small differences, surely it shouldn’t take more than a day to implement them and provide us with a proper translation. While you may not think it makes much of a difference, but a proper translation would stop our games feeling so Americanised and help prevent our culture from being diluted even more than it currently is by American TV shows. My cousin had a training game (can’t remember which one) where he lost a round for spelling grey correctly as the game was looking for the bastardised spelling. This then led to him spelling it wrong at school and getting into trouble.

The only game I can think of in recent years that has provided us with a true translation is Advance Wars: Days Of Ruin, where the script was rewritten to give users a more European feel to their battles and with it, correctly spelt words. This led to a much more enjoyable gameplay experience than when I played the US version.

I ask all developers to please take the brief time in the future to provide us with a true translation for our games, rather than giving us a game in the American language. There are differences, and it does make a difference, so the little effort would truly make a big difference. So maybe one day we can finally play our games in our native language.

Nintendo USB

7 06 2008

Article

USB

From Nintendo:

Description of Duties

  • Creating and executing a test plan for Wii’s USB devices
  • Executing test plans with great attention to detail and documenting bugs
  • Writing test procedure documents, gathering, and learning required software/hardware
  • Reproducing bug reports and helping find work-arounds or resolutions

Summary of Requirements

  • Extremely thorough with keen attention to detail and accuracy
  • Able to execute scripted tasks lists with regular repetition
  • Ability to reliably report and track defects via spreadsheets or other bug tracking software with great detail

It’s interesting to see Nintendo working on some sort of secret USB device, which we will hopefully ind about soon. Until then it’s time for my wild speculation ;) So heres some of my thoughts on what NintendoUSB should be:

Nintendo Fridge

We’ve all head Nintendo’s fridge analogy, that we can store our games and redownload them again, but the gaming community is calling out for a storage solution and only a few months ago Iwata hinted at an answer may be coming. A USB storage device would offer more space and fast transfers, finally letting us download in peace without having to delete 5 games first. A nice piece of software alowing us to expand the amount of channel slots on our Wii pre-installed onto the fridge would be pretty useful too. I’m really hoping we see this at E3.

Wii Key(board)

Nintendo has already added USB keyboard support for use with the Internet channel and WiiMail and it’s possible Nintendo might have some more channels lined up that use the keyboard. As USB is already activated, theres no firmware that needs sorting out and using USB will leave all four controller slots free for gaming. A few hotkey buttons such as back. forward, and favourites could be used for the Internet channel, while others such as Home, +, – and a D-Pad could be added for navigation, making the browsing experience much more friendly.

Wii Content Sticks

This ones a far stretch but Nintendo could use USB devices to give out at stores with Wii content, such as videos, demos (very very far stretch), channels (assuming we get offline channels), firmware updates and DS demos. This is an effective way of promoting the Wii and its games, is easier on their download limits (especially for large files like demos) and provides offline Wii owners with content usually unavailable.

Wii Hardware Update

While software updates can be easily managed by Firmware updates and maybe in the future Wii Content Sticks, hardware is a different matter. A simple USB extension could offer new hardware capabilities, such as DVD playback or something im to tired to think of at the moment.

Theres plenty more possibilities and only time will tell, but any advancement on Nintendo’s part is interesting so watch this space (and probably E3) for information as it comes.
