Smashing Stages – Nuts And Milk

17 08 2008

Nuts and Milk, the first ever third party game on a Nintendo console and as much a classic today as it was then. Its simple gameplay, varied levels and ability to make your own levels kept me hooked for hours when I was a child and even more hours now.

Now made into a smash stage, it offers a simple arena, but at the same time offers variety. You have slippery ice fields at the top, mid air combat in the ladder section and basic combat at the bottom.

Pink Kirby plays the role of Milk, Green Kirby is Nuts, while Jigglypuff is Yogurt. Items are set to “Arcade”

Oh and sorry about the shoddy framerate on the Nuts And Milk footage, I think i’ve fixed that now though :)

Smashing Stages – Binary Land

11 08 2008

I’m really enjoying doing these preludes to my stages so until further notice or people start complaining they are here to stay. Todays stage is based on the Famicom classic, Binary Land. I loved this game when I was little and played it to death. The game saw you playing as two lovestruck penguins trying to meet up with each other. However, the catch was that however you moved one penguin, the other would move in a mirror image.

The stage itself is very fun to play on with lots of tunnels to run, fight and hide in, with some little pits and alcoves for suprise attacks. It plays a bit like the Mario Bros. stage in the fact that you need to use a strong side attack to launch your opponents horizontally.

The Kirby’s are playing the role or Gurin and Malon with an item theme or Arcade.

Smashing Stages – Dr Mario

Nín hâo!

I’m back with more retro Smash Bros. goodness :) I’ve decided to do things a little differently this time. I’ve had many requests to post up a map of my level, so for the next video or two I’m going to be doing an audio introduction showing off the level in its entirety as well as a few of it’s features. Let me know what you think of this and wether I should continue using it.

This stage is based on the NES (and WiiWare) puzzler Dr Mario. The item set used is “performance enhancing”. This includes all healing items and status changing items, to keep with the games medicine and virus theme.

If you double click the video you can see extra notes and annotations :)

Smashing Stages – 50m

17 07 2008

This stage has caused me no end of trouble. But i’m happy with this version of 50m from Donkey Kong.

I know it’s a bit ghetto, but unfortunately thats how it ended up due to restrictions. There should be another level below (see ladders leading to nowhere) as well as another level above. However, I didn’t have enough pieces for this and a solid floor/roof wouldn’t exactly be very entertaining playability wise. Therefore I used the remaining blocks to make DK’s platform. This also stopped respawns from falling straight into the spike pit.

The stage itself offers a variety of areas to fight, some stationary, while others are moving. The conveyor belts can be used to your advantage to help with driving people into the spike pit or off the edge of the map. The ladders at the very bottom of the stage make good recovery points, or can be used as a sneaky route around the stage.

Boom Blox Blasterpiece – Mario And Goomba

10 07 2008

Hi Everybody!

It’s time for another Boom Blox stage, and this one is my favourite so far :) The scene is from the start of Super Mario Bros as you come face to face with your first Goomba enemy.

I had to use a mixture of different sized blocks as I didn’t have enough blocks or space, if I used a standard pixel stage as I did with Koopa. However, I think this gives a better and more varied blast so i’m happy with it :) I’ve also given the time delay mechanism a tweak, to try and get a more even blast. However, I think the next one needs a bit more oomph behind it.

Perhaps the best this about this level that I love so much, is that theres one black block that rebounds, and hits the last standing block.Heres the video for you all to enjoy.

Boom Blox Blasterpiece – Koopa

Mambo!

Here’s my second Creative Outlet of the day, keeping with the Koopa Theme. This time, instead of smashing each other to pieces, we’re smashing the koopa up itself!

This designs based on the same as the smash stage, which are both based off the Koopa I drew for the Podcast banner. Luckily though, this time I can fit the entire Koopa in :) The design is from the NES version of the arcade classic Mario Bros, which is also where the crab you can see above is from :) I picked this one as I liked its shell pattern.

I’ve also done a bit of tinkering with the time delay mechanic. By throwing in a wall of 4×4 bomb bricks it gives a much bigger blast spray than the single row used in the Toadsworth video. I prefer this one as afterall, a bigger blast means bigger fun! So heres the destructive fun for you to enjoy :)

Smashing Stages – Koopa Cape

8 07 2008

Ahoy!

I’ve got the first of two Creative Outlet’s for you today! This stage is based off the Koopa design from the arcade game Mario Bros, and not only looks great, but plays great too :)

The stage manages to pretty much perfectly recreate the classic koopa design, with normal blocks being used for the skin and shell, while ice is used for the random white bits on the back of the shell. However, as always, a lack of space means that i’ve had to cut the legs off, but lets be honest, this area would have been dead space as far as a functional level is concerned.

The stage offers two main battle areas, one on top of the head, and one on the back of the shell. If in danger, a well timed jump onto the elivator will give you some time to prepare yourself on the top field, while if your in danger up there then you can take a leap of faith. The small two block area to the left of the shell back is perfect for juggling your opponents, or preparting a smash attack, as your covered from three sides. Also, the eye socket makes good cover due to its enclosed space. However, be careful as if an opponent manages to get in there with you, one/both of you are doing to recieve massive damage.

Boom Blox Blasterpiece – Toadsworth

Jambo!

I’ve decided to go back to an old piece of work this time from Boom Blox. A month or two ago, I posted up a sprite wall of Toadsworth. Since then i’ve done a slight redesign, such as removing the firework blox from underneath Toadsworth’s ‘stache and i’ve also built a time delay bomb mechanism behind the wall so set to explosion off for me while I hold the camera. I’ve tried to get a few angles for you, from the front, back, in between and frame by frame for your destructive pleasure. So heres the new, improved, video, Toadsworth destruction just for you. I hope you enjoy it and let me know what you think :)

Smashing Stages – Mario’s Cement Factory

2 07 2008

Creative Outlet

Here’s my first entry into the Smashing Stages section, Mario’s Cement Factory. This Game & Watch game broungt me some delight and far too much frustration when I was younger, so what better way to relieve some stress then smashing up Mr Game & Watch on this stage I love to hate.

I’ve used spikes to replicate the sudden death you would experience in the game if you accidently missed the lifts, and that weird tank thing fr the cement holders. Unfortunately I ran out of blocks before I could put the Vans in either side of the stage. Other than that i’m pretty happy with the way the stage works. Theres plenty of little fighting areas for close up scraps while the cement containers provide great defence/rebounding. However, as always, the computer has no idea how to handle spikes so spend alot of their time stuck in them.
